Mo'Nique Imes-James (Mo'Nique) is an American comedienne and actress who rose to fame in the UPN series The Parkers while also making a name for herself as a stand-up comedian hosting a variety of venues including Showtime at the Apollo.
I loved Mo'nique on The Parkers. Just in case you've never seen it, check out the theme song below. While you're at it, why not get the DVD and make it a blockbuster night?
In 2001, she appeared in a spinoff film of The Original Kings of Comedy called The Queens of Comedy.
Check out this clip of her performance on Queens of Comedy:
Mo'Nique transitioned to film with roles in such films as Phat Girlz, and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins. In 2009, she received critical praise for her role in the film Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire. Check the trailor below:
She has won numerous awards including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe Award, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for her performance in Precious. She is the 16th African American actress to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and the 4th to win.
You can check her acceptance speech here. The text is below:
"First, I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics. I want to thank Miss Hattie McDaniel for enduring all that she had to so that I would not have to. Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey because you touched it, the whole world saw it. Ricky Anderson, our attorney of Anderson & Smith, thank you for your hard work. My entire BET family, my Precious family, thank you so much. To my amazing husband Sidney, thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to forego doing what's popular in order to do what's right. And baby, you were so right. God bless us all."
She currently hosts The Mo'Nique Show, a late night talk show that premiered in October 2009 on BET.
HUSL Today Salutes Mo'Nique!!!
