A Day Late & A Dollar Short: First Lady Michelle Obama Visits South Africa

As if she could get any more FABULOUS and become an even better example of African American women, First Lady Michelle Obama is visiting South Africa along with her two daughters, Sasha and Malia, First Grandmother and her niece and nephew. The purpose of her visit is to speak about the value of education and to promote her worldwide campaign to encourage young people to assume leadership roles in their countries.

They landed on Monday and have been busy ever since. Yesterday, she spent time with South Africa's (former) President Nelson Mandela and visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg. Today she made several stops including one where she addressed the Young African Women Leaders Forum, in a Soweto township, Johannesburg, South Africa. The 75 forum attendees, who were chosen to participate by the US government, also attended her speech at Regina Mundi church this morning.

She is spreading her message of healthy eating to the people of South Africa and go to work helping them build a garden of their own.  She went to Nanga Vhuthilo Center, a community center in Soweto that serves 300 family. FLOTUS and less than a dozen of the women from the leadership forum volunteered.

The clothes she has been wearing during her trip have also been a nod to different designers and GREAT causes in South Africa. For example, the top you see in the photo to your right  is from ASOS Africa,  a collection that has been designed, sourced and produced by community groups in Africa. The collection is produced in Kenya to support the work of SOKO, a workshop dedicated to developing sustainable and long term solutions to economic challenges in Kenyan communities. Part of the money goes to philanthropy.
