Wow 2011 is OVA!

Where did the time go?

First, I hope you all can accept my apology for not posting during the Christmas holiday, I had to take time away from my computer and get my mind right for 2012.

Now that we have that out of the way...I feel compelled to take the time out and share a few words. First, I hope you all can reflect on the hap'nins of the months past with joy and appreciation. Regardless of how things played out for you, recognize that you are writing your testimony with each new day you are awake. I don't know about you all, but I'm gonna have one HELL of a testimony!

Regardless of how negative things seem or how positive you wish they were, take note of your surroundings and appreciate them. Telling your loved ones you love them is underrated. Its such a satisfying and fulfilling experience (especially with young children) & I hope you all do it as often as possible.

Whether you're the type to make New Year's Resolutions, I would like to take this time to encourage you to consider making LIFE RESOLUTIONS.

Instead of waiting until January 1 to make a change, get up right now and make that change. You may have one of the common resolutions to lose weight or find ways to make more money or you may have a less traditional resolution. It does not matter. What matters is that you remain steadfast and dedicated to changing your life forever, not just for the sake of fulfilling a resolution you wanted to keep for a year. Whats gonna happen if you lose the weight you wanted to lose in 2012 but gain it back in 2013?

Don't be the person who can recognize something you want to correct in March but decide you will put off correcting it until a new year arrives. While new years are an opportunity for a fresh start, do not limit yourself to one new start per year. You can have a fresh start on July 10 if you decide its necessary.

While you're working on fulfilling your resolutions, don't just focus on aesthetics take the time to address the root of the problem. For instance, if your resolution is to lose weight you may want to brainstorm the causes of your weight gain. Are you an emotional eater? Are you a bored eater? Are you just a greedy person? Address those things and then you can move on and continue to rectify other things you decide to work on.

Finally, don't just focus on 2012! Position yourself so that you're not making the same resolutions in 2020. If you want to resolve a problem in your life by the end of 2012, DO THAT. Give yourself realistic deadlines and checkpoints to make sure you stay on track.

From me and my family to you and your loved ones, I want to wish you all a happy new year!! If the way I ended 2011 is any indication of how fantastic 2012 will be, I'm going to need a stronger footing with which to brace myself!

P.S. You all may notice that for the first 8-10 weeks of 2012, I won't be posting as much (if at all). The reason for this is not that I don't enjoy blogging, I will instead be studying for the Florida Bar Exam. Considering the intense nature of preparation, I won't have the time to post as much as I would like to. I want you all to know I will be thinking of posting and I look forward to returning to my life as a blogger around March 5. If you all believe in the power of prayer for positive outcomes, do me a solid and send one above for me. If you're one of the people reading my blog to be nosey, keep it cute and put it on mute. This post is not for you.

The Holiday Jobs Report

The holidays are upon us and seem to be approaching at a faster pace than usual. OR maybe thats just the last minute shopper in me talking. Moving on. The holiday season is an excellent time to pick up a second job A recent survey from snagajob.com found that 51% of hiring managers are filling season jobs this year.

BEFORE you go looking at me sideways, I know retail jobs are notorious for paying low wages while requiring a lot of work but its all about how you look at it. You can either sit at home for hours on end doing nothing and making nothing or you can earn a few hundred bucks working a few hours a week. This is not the time to get choosy.

Target plans to hire 92k season employees nationwide to staff its distribution centers as works and store team members. They accept online applications.

If you're in Kentucky, Zappos is taking application for its 3k temporary jobs at its fulfillment centers in Shepherdsville, KY. The pay is $8.25-$9.00 depending on shift. It may not sound like much, but its better than making nothing

Macy’s is hiring 78k temp works to staff Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, call centers, distribution centers and warehouses. Positions may require overnight, evening or weekend shifts. Online applications are accepted.

Best Buy will add 15k hourly associates; its phone support and distribution centers will bring on more than 3k employees to provide customer support.

Toys R Us is hiring 40k plus toy demonstrators and sales associates. The toy seller is also hiring for 10 distribution centers, including the one in McCarran, Nevada.

There is sure to be an increase in package mailings so check with package handling services like FedEx, UPS and DHL.

If you're in an area that offers outdoor activities, look into working a ski resort. If you need tips on how to search for seasonal jobs click HERE.

TIP: Instead of the old school door-to-door search (the old school way still has its perks), you should maximize the number of applications you complete by checking for a "Career Opportunities" section on the company's website.  Do a follow up call to the company and get a clear idea on the way they usually process applications and to show your interest in a position.It may also help to ask at the places you frequent like various retail stores.  This should be easy because you're already a regular so swallow your pride and ask to speak to a manager. Make sure you do this when you're dressed professionally and prepared for possible on the spot interviews.  

Keep in mind that some temp seasonal jobs have the potential to become permanent positions. Treat them as such.

GREAT morning everyone! First off, let me start by saying ITS MY BIRTHDAY so that makes it an even GREATER morning!!! Yay me! Second of all, its my birthday!!! Ok ok ok, I'm done I promise! Here is today's quote:

Forgive me, but the post below is a wee bit lengthy. I felt inclined to share. 

Its amazing what you remember when you allow your mind to stop and think. 

I remember the time when my older sister and I tried to ride our bikes through the mud and we both fell. I remember throwing away our clothes because we knew we'd get in trouble. I remember seeing my stepmom in the hospital deteriorating from Stage IV lung cancer. I remember how I felt when she hugged me for the last time.I remember how I felt when I hugged my first niece after she came home from the hospital. I remember falling so deeply in love with her  that words couldn't explain. I remember my first love, and my first heartbreak. I remember the times I felt like God was mad at me. I reflect on those moments now as a time of growth for me. I learned to listen to myself and trust my gut. I've learned that even when it seems like my world revolves around something, its still considered one of the "small things" when I take a step back.    

Its amazing what you remember when you allow yourself to be humbled.

I never realized how easy it is to forget how far you've come. I remember growing up in Belle Glade and being teased for looking so different. I remember crying to my father because I didn't feel beautiful. I remember my first day of college. I remember how many times I wrote my personal statement for law school. I remember staying up late nights studying for the LSAT while still balancing a full course load. I remember how I felt when I first got admitted to Howard Law. I remember calling my friend so elated that one of my dreams had come true. I remember how I felt when I first hit 100 page hits on my first blog.  I remember how it felt to dance with my father at the Debutante ball back in 2004. I remember teaching my younger sister how to ride her bike and the first time she rode without training wheels. Its amazing what you remember when you humble yourself. I remember not getting the score I wanted on the LSAT the first time. I remember not leaving "on time" to move to DC.

I said all that to say that I want all of you to stay humble. Stay in touch with who you are at your core. Most importantly, keep God first (or if you don't believe in God, keep your faith at your core). Its easy to praise him when things are going your way, but I challenge you to thank him for the challenges that shape your character. I challenge you to find joy in your life EVERY SINGLE DAY. I challenge you to NEVER allow yourself to go around feeling sorry for yourself. I challenge you to be grateful. I challenge you to be humble. I challenge you to be good to yourself and to live a lifestyle that works for you. My birthday wish is that you will accept this challenge and go on a journey to create a better life for yourself.

The Newark Black Film Festival Celebrates its 37th Anniversary!

June 29 – August 3, 2011

The Newark Black Film Festival (NBFF), is celebrating its 37th Anniversary as one of the nation's defining voices on behalf of independent film, opens in Newark with adult screenings beginning on Wednesday, June 29, with a six-week run ending on August 3.

Youth Cinema will be held on Mondays at the Newark Public Library and at the Newark Museum on Wednesday beginning July 6.
The festival is a showcase for films that focus on the experiences and concerns of contemporary African Americans, as well as an outlet for films about the African American experience from earlier eras.  The six-week festival is free to the public and provides emerging filmmakers, writers, directors and producers with a high profile outlet for their work.
The festival features the Paul Robeson Awards in 2012, a biennial competition established in 1985.  The Robeson Awards honor the spirit of Paul Robeson—renowned activist, scholar, performer and athlete.  Winning films will be shown at Newark Screens on Springfield Ave., Newark, NJ.

I hear you complaining about seeing another Madea movie. I see your tweets about predictable black films that have star studded casts just to fill seats. See, Jumping the Broom. My people spend so much time complaining about the quality of Tyler Perry's movies & plays and how they depict African Americans so get out and support other film makers! I respect Tyler Perry for what he does in terms of making movies and keeping black actors & actresses employed but I think he is merely a drop in a bucket. Its time we started to support each other more often. If you want to see more brown faces on the silver screen there is only one way to make it happen: SUPPORT them!

Déjà vu Politics: Mitt Romney announces his bid to become POTUS in 2012

As the GOP scrambles to find someone to lose compete against President Obama in 2012, Mitt Romney has emerged as a candidate (yes, again!). According to CNN, the former Massachusetts governor and 2008 Republican presidential candidate formally announced his second bid for the White House, declaring his candidacy at an event in New Hampshire, the state that holds the first primary in the presidential caucus and primary calendar.







Captain Obvious whispered into my ear that Romney's first order of business is to distance himself from our current President and he has already began drawing his line in the sand.  Says the man who tried to be everything to everyone in his first unsuccessful bid for the white house, "Barack Obama has failed America." Are you shocked? Yea me neither.


What else? Well its probably no surprise that only a few short hours after his announcement to run he has earned the title of "GOP frontrunner." Could you imagine how AWESOME it would be if only a few hours into your first day at work you became the "frontrunner" for the supervisor position?  

"From my first day in office my number one job will be to see that America once again is number one in job creation," Romney said when he announced his candidacy.

Romney is at or near the top of the most recent national polls of the Republican nomination horserace. He also appears to be the leading Republican presidential candidate when it comes to the battle for campaign cash. Romney aides say the campaign brought in more than $10 million from donors across the country during an all day phone bank held last month in Las Vegas.

Romney also spent much of April touring the country meeting with donors and fundraisers. He hopes to bring in an impressive haul for the crucial second quarter to show his strength as a candidate.

"Republicans are looking for someone who can take on President Obama, and right now, Romney is seen as the only Republican who can do that..." -Andrew Smith, Director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

 Romney raised $65.1 million in contributions for his 2008 bid for the GOP nomination. In addition he loaned his campaign $42.3 million from his personal funds.


Has anyone told him nobody competes for second place? I'm sorry, I should appear politically unbiased. Guess I failed huh? Oopsies and daisies.  In case no one has told him yet, Romney is going to need more than Romneycare, $100 million and experience in the private sector to beat President Obama. Did I hear someone ask for a miracle?

Now that the holidays are over we are all going back to our "normal lives" of tight schedules, tight deadlines and even tighter jeans (I know I'm not the only one that gained holiday weight!). While you may no longer see commercials encouraging you to donate to St. Judes and there is no longer a volunteer standing outside of your grocery store ringing a bell, there are still people in need. The children in need of care at St. Judes dont disappear after New Years and neither do the people who utilize the services of the Salvation Army. Although you may not hear about it as much, the people of Haiti are still in need as well. I encourage you all to make a commitment to give of yourself to someone in need today. While the media paints a picture of a person in need  as one with tattered clothing and a shopping cart filled with their prized possessions, everyone in need does not fit that profile. Old proverbs and general wisdom sayings tells us that looks can be deceiving as one's appearance does not always reveal his/her struggles. For example:
A woman who is overwhelmed by a new baby.
A man who is mourning the loss of his father.
A child who tells you their father was recently deployed.
A soldier who recently returned to the states and is adjusting to life as a civilian.

To every veteran near and far, I'd like to take the time to say THANK YOU! I encourage all of you to thank a Veteran today for the freedom you enjoy. They sacrifice their time and risk their lives through the bold decision they make to become a serviceman or servicewoman. I'd also like to thank the families and others who support our veterans because you all deserve recognition as well.

Do something today that embodies the theme of Veteran's Day:  "Honoring all who served." 

Before you carry on with your day, take a moment of silence for all of those veterans who lost their lives serving our great nation! Before you say anything, YES I understand that is what Memorial Day is for.

Sidenote: I recently sent a care package to a very special soldier overseas. It was easy and more simple than I imagined. If you have a few moments a month, I encourage you to adopt a soldier and send him/her their favorite knick-knacks and you can do so for under $20!!! For many of them, it is not about what is inside the package as much as it is about the care and thought that went in to sending it.

Back to school...

Today is the first day of my last year of school (if I decide against an LLM or an MBA)!!! I'm so excited, but that means I wont have time to blog today. I want to take a little breather to "take it all in" and enjoy the days moments away from a computer screen.

Since you're here, take a moment to read through some of our older posts while I enjoy the beginning stages of the fruits of my labor.

Do you know what today is???

Its HUSL Today's Anniversary!!!

I know I haven't been posting regularly for the entire year, but what the hay its still a celebration!  In honor of our special day, I decided to take some time to reflect on the past year.

What I've learned: Blogging has truly been a journey of self discovery. I've learned so much about myself in this past year, and YES a year really does make a big difference. A year ago I was sitting behind my desk at my public interest internship struggling to write my first post. Now that I have allowed HUSL Today to have its own personality as a source of many types of information, it has taken on a life of its own. If I read an interesting story or if a controversial topic emerges, I now feel an obligation to acknowledge it and write a post about it.

What I wish I knew: How much hard work blogging regularly can be! Unless you have ever tried your hand at blogging there is really no way to explain this. All I can say is, there are a lot of late nights and early mornings. Thinking of topics, researching info and putting my own spin on them is extremely time consuming.

What I look forward to: An increase in user interaction between myself and my readers. I know you all stop by regularly because our page impressions are on a steady increase. The second biggest part of a blog is user interaction. If no one comments or leaves constructive criticism I have no way of knowing whether you liked a particular post or not. I'd like to get to know all of you, but I can't do that unless you introduce yourselves. Dont be shy :).


What I plan to change: As I said before, blogging has become a personal journey for me. On that journey I have learned I reach my goals more often when I articulate them. This time I'm going to articulate them in groups of 3: 
1. Learn to take a TRUE break when I know I need one. I often find myself blogging on my day off or working on another business venture. I'm always so motivated that I feel guilty when I let loose and become lazy. What I dont think I do often enough is give myself mental breaks. I vow to start doing this more.
2. Adjust the way I approach situations. I often approach issues by asking "whats wrong?" instead of starting with "whats right?" Thats just my way of saying I will be more optimistic than pessimistic. I will change my attitude and remain thankful for every opportunity presented to me, good or bad.
3. Allow HUSL Today to develop its own personality. I will fill this in as I think more about where I want to take HUSL Today and the path I want to take to get there.
