Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

GREAT morning everyone! Today's quote:

“The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself, the more energy you will have.” -Norman Vincent Peale

Whenever you find yourself lacking motivation seek to discover a mission that is bigger than you. Invest you energy in your mission and you will notice your energy will increase significantly. You will be driven by your passion to impact a greater good.

You may choose to volunteer at a homeless shelter once a month, facilitate a clothing drive for battered women seeking to re-enter the workplace, or organize resume workshops for college students. Whatever you decide to do, be sure to follow through and remain dedicated to and consistent with the mission.

GREATmorning beautiful peeps!

In business, I’ve discovered that my purpose is to do my best to my utmost ability every day. That’s my standard. I learned early in my life that I had high standards.
-Donald Trump
Today's message is brought to you by the letter P as in Purpose. Today is the day to (re)discover your life's purpose. If you have not done so already, take a moment and write down what you believe is the true purpose of your life. Eliminate all the white noise caused by desires for money and expensive status symbols and focus on what you believe you were put on earth to accomplish. Once you are comfortable with your purpose(s) think about what you need to do to accomplish your goals. By thinking about this, you are forcing yourself to evaluate the direction of your life. It is important to do so because once we begin to live with purpose we begin to live a more fulfilled life. For example, if you discover that your purpose is to serve your community through politics, then its time for you to start networking. By the same token, if you discover your true calling is to become a teacher, it is time for you to work on your communication skills.  Once you figure out your purpose, each decision you make should be in line with your purpose.  A life overtaken with a seriousness of purpose is one governed by that purpose. It is what we revert to daily. It is our central focus. It is our baseline for how we assess our success. Develop a purpose that works for you and become dedicated to living your life with purpose.

Love!

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

GREATmorning everyone! What a week we've had! I for one know I'm thankful today is Friday. Today's quote:

“Let yourself be open and life will be easier. A spoon of salt in a glass of water makes the water undrinkable. A spoon of salt in a lake is almost unnoticed." -Buddha

Today I challenge you all to open yourself up to accept new opportunities and ideas. Often times when we get older we become set in our ways and develop tunnel vision. How do you know if its happened to you? If someone asks you why you do something a certain way you respond with "well because its how I've always done it." We decide what we like and do like and what we will and wont do. Unfortunately, doing so does not make our lives easier. What happens is that we become stuck in the time period we were in when we made our decision.  I'm not challenging you to force new things on your life, I'm challenging you to leave yourself open to new things. There is nothing wrong with favoring a certain brand, but do not become so loyal that you miss the opportunity to try something better. You dont have to abandon your favorite brand of coffee, but if competition offers a better brew for a cheaper price at least give them a try. You dont have to give up your favorite search engine, but if a competitor promises a better search give them a try. You dont have to give up anything you love in order to try something new. Although you may not like the new product, at least you have given yourself a fair opportunity to try a new thing.

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

GREATmorning beautiful people! To make up for the past few days, I decided to choose a few quotes for today.

Do more than is required. What is the distance between someone who achieves their goals consistently and those who spend their lives and careers merely following? The extra mile. -Gary Ryan Blair

Failure doesn't mean you are a failure it just means you haven't succeeded yet.  -Robert H. Schuller
By working faithfully eight hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work twelve hours a day. -Robert Frost

Its almost Friday and for many of you that means you are running low on motivation. Trust me, I understand the feeling. I challenge you to imagine how you will feel once you attain what you work for. Imagine how satisfying it will be once you are recognized for your hard work by being blessed with a promotion. Imagine how wonderful you will feel once you close on your first house. Allow yourself to dream. Allow yourself to imagine. Allow yourself to fantacize. Why? Because when you feel like you can't go on, when you feel like quitting slapping your boss you should use your imagination as your motivation.

Dont imagine too long, life and opportunity will pass you by. Allow your mind to wander, but bring it back to reality and transform your excitement into positive energy and motivation.

RIP Aaliyah

9 years ago today, the Princess of R&B was removed from the physical world. I know I said I was going to take a mental day, but as a fan of hers I could not allow the day to pass without doing something in her honor. 9 years later, her death is still difficult to fathom. Without further delay I present my top 5 Aaliyah pics (in no particular order):

...and a bonus

RIP Aaliyah 1979-2001. We miss you!

Whats your favorite Aaliyah song?

Taking a mental day ....

As difficult as it is for me to admit this, I need a day off. My schedule has gotten hectic and I dont have the mental energy to post. I'd rather take a day off and recuperate than to put my name on a subpart post. I've realized I need time to get back into the swing of things.

I shall return on Thursday. Thanks for your patience.

GREAT morning folks!!

rose in concrete Pictures, Images and Photos

"Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as this is all there is." --Mary Ann Radmacher

Above are 11 phrases that I hope will help you conquer the Monday Blues. Do not simply speed read them and then move on. Stop fora  few moments after you read each phrase and think about what it truly means to Live with Intention...Walk to the edge...Do what you love, etc.   Its very easy to simply read words and fail to internalize them. Its easy to proclaim that you will appreciate your friends. Its easy to say you want to do what you love. Its easy to say you want to continue to learn. The difficult part comes when the time comes for you to make your proclamations apart of your life. What are you doing to transform your words into actions? Do not say the words because they sound nice, say them because you mean them. Proclamations only become our reality when we take action!

GREAT afternoon everyone! I hope your Friday is off to a great start! Mine is definitely off to a busy start hence the late post. Here is today's quote:

Sharing is Caring: Facebook wants to share your location with your "friends"

Article source: http://madamenoire.com/16797/facebook-taking-no-privacy-to-the-next-level-12806/

Why would you want all of your Facebook friends to know where you are 100% of the time?

The social networking site launched a new feature this week called Facebook Places. The new feature shares your location with your friends and borrows heavily from existing services like Foursquare and Gowalla.

Facebook staff said the feature will be useful not only to let friends know where they are, but also to learn if their friends are nearby at the same time, and to write down what they are doing at the location and what they think about it — creating a trail allowing friends to see what the writer did there days or even years ago.

Places product manager Michael Sharon wrote on Facebook’s blog that Places has safeguards to address potential privacy concerns.

First, check-ins will appear only to users’ Facebook friends as a default, and users can further trim the recipients list to specific friends. Users also can remove check-ins by phone or web at any time, Sharon said.

Yes, if you have a Facebook account, you are now automatically logged into the service, so your friends can tag your locations. To disable: From your Account menu, chose Privacy Settings, click Customize and then Customize Settings. Under Things I Share, you can change Places I Check In and People Here Now.

Also, if you don’t want your friends to check you into Places, sharing your current location with a bunch of people you may or may not know, go down to the section called Things Others Share and find Friends can check me in to Places. Set this to Disabled.
So, in a nutshell Places will let people know when you are not home, when you are away on a two-week vacation, when you leave work, when you go to Target, when you arrive at Vanessa’s birthday party, and let weirdos know where minors (the millions of minors on Facebook) are hanging out. Sounds like Places can invade your privacy, all you have to do is sign-in.

Sounds like more shady practices are going on over there in Facebook land. Protect yourselves people. I mean that with the utmost sincerity. Do not trust anyone in the online community enough to share your location with them. If they are really your friends, you can call them or text them your location. Do not under any circumstances make it possible for complete strangers to find out where you are. Not everyone will use this information for your benefit or the way it was intended to be used.

GREAT morning! Happy almost Friday!

“There are no mistakes. The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant, are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever steps we take, they're necessary to reach the places we've chosen to go.”-Richard Bach

I know we all have a tendency to view things that throw us off our paths as a mistake. We may have misstepped, misspoke or acted out of our character. Regardless of what it is, U challenge you all to change the way you look at such things. Whenever you are thrown off course, take a moment to observe the situation. Recognize what caused you to get there and determine what you have to do to get back on course. Recognizing the action/behavior will allow you to remain conscious of yourself and it will decrease the likelihood that you will do it again since you already know the consequences. There are no mistakes, only lessons you were meant to learn. Learn them. Internalize them. Grow from them.

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

Good morning! Happy hump day!

“The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it.”- Arnold H. Glasgow

Patience is a virtue many think they have but few actually possess. It is one of those "things" that is hard to detect but shows up in moments of adversity. Before you rush to make rash decisions do something that may be outside of your character, take a moment to breathe and rethink your mindset.

Just for fun, take a look at the Sprite commercial below. Takes me back to my days as a toddler.

Today is the first day of my last year of school (if I decide against an LLM or an MBA)!!! I'm so excited, but that means I wont have time to blog today. I want to take a little breather to "take it all in" and enjoy the days moments away from a computer screen.

Since you're here, take a moment to read through some of our older posts while I enjoy the beginning stages of the fruits of my labor.

I appreciate you all stopping by.

GREATmorning all! Happy Monday! Here is today's quote:
"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."
-Joseph Campbell

Growing up my superheroes were not the nerdy guy who changed into a red & blue cape in a phone booth. He didn't drive a sleek black sportscar. They couldn't fly. They didn't have any superpowers. My heroes were people in the community with their sleeves rolled up working hard to make a difference. They were the teachers who stayed a few hours after school to ensure all students understood the day's lesson. They were the firefighters who taught us about firesafety. They were the police officers who worked to "protect & serve" my community. They were the mothers and fathers who believed in the idea that "it takes a village to raise a child" and helped keep everyone in line. Their power was in their perserverance. The talent was in their tenacity. Their ability was withdrawn from their agility. Today I challenge you all to change the face of superheroes in your community and in your career. Be the example for your colleagues. Do random acts of kindness especially when you dont think some one is watching. Become a hero. The world will smile upon you.

Diary of a blogger volume 1

Dear Diary,

This week has been a terrible week. Ok I should not say terrible but it was not the best of the best. I can be too critical of myself at times. I was forced to desert my love (HUSL Today) for most of the day .

Lately I've been considering changing the angle of HUSL Today to make it more of an inspiration source with a balance of information. I want to share more articles and more news sources but I havent decided exactly how I'm going to do that. I start school on Tuesday and I really want to work on my posting consistency. Most times I am awake until 2am writing posts and scheduling them for later that day. I'm not sure I will be able to continue doing so as the school year progresses. I will continue to post everyday that its possible no matter what.

The most difficult part of blogging is finding the time to create quality entries. there were times when I could have thrown together entries and I decided my readers deserve more than that. Lately I havent been able to find the time to blog like I want to. This week was especially difficult since I was told about a last minute training. Of course the trainers were "innovative" so they encouraged us to put down our cell phones and computers and interact with our teammates. In situations like that, no one wants to be the one who does not follow directions. Also, I didnt want to seem like the person who could not put my technology down. Nevertheless, I played along. It was hard to focus, but I understand the reason we were encouraged to focus on the message.

I'm going to use this weekend to re-evaluate my approach to blogging and school.  In the mean time, I recently started a relationship & love blog with my friends. Check it here. See if you can guess which personality is me.

All my love,

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

Good morning beautiful people! Here is today's quote:

“The most successful people are those who are good at Plan B.”   -James Yorke

As we transition from work to weekend mode, we grow more excited about our weekend plans. Whether you're planning to go to dinner with friends at a new restaurant or spending your entire weekend in the bed doing nothing more than snacking and using your remote, the weekend is often an exciting time for many people. We can make plans, and then life happens. What the weekend has taught me is the importance of having a plan B. Moreover, it has taught me the important of having a quality plan B. One of the greatest (and most frustrating) things about life is that it is unpredictable. You may have planned for several weeks for a night on the town with your friends and then one of your friend's left her headlights on and the carpool fell through. Do you scramble to make the night happen anyway or do you give up and stay in for the night? You spent months drafting and revising your business plan and you finally landed a meeting with a group of investors. On the morning of your presentation, there is a flash flood in your neighborhood and you are trapped. Do you call your investors immediately to cancel the meeting or do you pool your resources together to attempt a videochat first?

The challenge for today is to have a plan B. You can overcome adversity a whole lot easier if you have a back up plan. Having a quality plan B will also teach you to be flexible. No matter how much you plan, there will always be unpredictable variables. Great people leave room for variables and even learn to anticipate them.

Does it "PAY" to go to college??

I read a Yahoo article this morning titled "20 worst paying college degrees" and I immediately wondered which majors they didnt list. I've realized there are people who make a living by making lists like "20 worst paying jobs" or "20 best colleges" or "10 best ways to please your mate." I know there are dozens if not hundreds of things to major in, but for the most part they all fall under one of several umbrellas: Arts & Science, Speech Pathology, Business, Behavioral & Community Sciences, Education, Engineering, Honors College, Marine Science, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, The Arts.

Here is the list:

As you can see, child and family studies earned the honors as the worst-paying college major. The average graduate earns a beginning salary of $29,500. What's equally discouraging is that the salary of someone in this field will barely budge after 15 years in the profession. It sends the message to think twice before choosing a college major that involves children. I thought children were our future? What this list says is to steer clear of career paths that many say are the most fulfilling-those that involve changing a child's life.

What I think the list and lists similar to it fail to mention is the nonmonetary perks those professionals receive. If you have a passion for working with children, do not be discouraged by the pay scale. You may make $160k a year but you may also live a miserable and lonely lifestyle. By the same token, you may make $50k a year and live a happy and fulfilled life. My point is to focus on things other than money when you are trying to decide your career path. Money cannot and it will not buy your happiness. It will help pay a mortgage on a bigger home or a nicer car but if you spend so much time working that you end up single and irritated what fun is that?

What do you all think this list says about going to college? Did you consider any of these majors?

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

Good morning everyone. Below is today's quote:

“You can't do today's job with yesterday's methods and be in business tomorrow”
-Unknown

Today's challenge is to learn about all the new technology available to us today. Have you ever met someone in your workplace who is out of touch with technology? Whats more they may be so out of touch they have discouraged themselves from even trying. These people are easy to recognize because they are most likely older and if presented with a Powerpoint program they might cringe. I got a promotion once because the senior level employees were so out of touch with technology.

For the younger generations it is more difficult to recognize them. We might not know how to operate an iPod touch or how to use a GPS. Do not miss the opportunity to accomplish something great because you do not know how to operate technology. I know you may be saying you will never become that person, but realize that technology changes everyday. As young professionals get older, it is easy to lose touch with whats new. If you purchased a new computer today by next week the technology on it can be outdated. Stay abreast of all the newest programs. Read technology newsletters and magazines. When new products emerge teach yourself how to use them. Do not stop at products Apple sells, teach yourself how to use as many new products as your schedule allows. Doing so will not only allow you to stay current with technology, it will also encourage you to continue to think ahead. It will also allow you t continue to compete with younger generations.

Randoms: I've been slow to post this week because of an "interactive" staff training all week. I dont know who's idea it was but we are not allowed to bring our laptops in the name of actually "interacting."

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

Good morning ladies and gents! Its hump day! For me that means 2 more days of seemingly endless trainings. Does anyone else get excited on hump day? Below is today's quote:

“Don't rely on someone else for your happiness and self worth. Only you can be responsible for that. If you can't love and respect yourself - no one else will be able to make that happen. Accept who you are - completely; the good and the bad - and make changes as YOU see fit - not because you think someone else wants you to be different.”-Stacey Charter

Here at HUSL Today we are agent's of change. I encourage everyone to adapt to situations and to be open to change; however, you all should understand that there is a caveat attached to that advice.  That caveat is that any changes you choose to make should not be a result of a desire to please any one else but yourself. If you are unhappy with your attitude or if it is starting to have a negative impact on your life, change it. Do not change it because Bob, Joe & Susan think you should talk, walk and act a certain way. Take responsibility for who you become. Again, at the risk of sounding cliche, you are the the one who has to live with the decisions you make. The funny thing about people is that our opinions change. What happens if you make decisions to please others and they end up unsatisfied? Will you change something else? Where would you draw the line?  Meeting new people and making new connections is wonderful. You are wonderful. Allow them to get to know the real you. I'm sure they would be in for a real treat!

Poetry Corner

Love poetry!

SN: Happy Birthday to my one and only little sister RLW! I love you!

Randoms: This is HUSL Today's 500th post! *does a celebration dance*

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

Good morning peeps! You know the drill...below is today's out the door quote:

"Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony."
-Thomas Merton

Make your health and your sanity a priority in your life. I know it sounds cliche but its worth addressing the power of having a healthy mind. Find an outlet for your stress and your anger. Whether its a 3 mile run 3 times a week or a weekly mani/pedi combo or writing in a daily journal find out what works for you. Personally, I write poetry and listen to music to change my mood or to help prevent a burnout. Find your own solutions and stick with them. If you are not sure what they are, open yourself up to explore new things. I cant play guitar well but I've found even attempting to play has eased my mind when my usual methods didnt seem to do the trick. Here's another little secret: sometimes when I'm alone in elevators I dance! Schedule time to vent your passions if you feel you cant find the time. The key is not to think of it as finding "extra" time but to view it as using your time more wisely so that you can nurture your mental health. Your passions and your outlets should be something you can go to when you are frustrated or at your wit's end. Find them! Nurture them! Use them!

What do you all do to support your mental health and to prevent burnouts? Share your tips.

[Video] Atlanta Teen Receives $1 Million in Academic Scholarships, crushes stereotypes

As colleges and universities around the country prepare to accept hundreds of thousands of incoming freshman, this is a great time to listen to their voices.

Below is one of the more memorable graduation speeches I've come across (I know its a day late and a dollar short but bear with me). Its mainly because of the person making the speech-Atlanta teen Deonte Bridges. At the time he spoke at his High School's graduation he had accumulated $1 million in academic scholarships which as he declares is more than enough to cover his undergraduate and graduate expenses. Also worth noting is his achievement as the 1st African American MALE valedictorian from Booker T. Washington high school in 10 years! Take a listen...

HUSL Today encourages Deonte Bridges to keep working hard and to remain focused on his path to success.

Sidenote: To the incoming class of 2014, welcome to college!

HUSL Today TIPS: The informal addition to the application process

Back story:
A few years back, I was working in a department store. I was sitting at my station and a young lady waltzes in to ask about our application process. She was wearing torn jeans, her shirt was falling off of her shoulders and she was wearing dirty flip flops. She looked like she had been up all night so I asked her where she came from. She proudly told me her sole purpose for coming to our store was to apply for a job. I happened to be lucky enough to work the next day when she turned in her app-wrinkled and folded. While I was not present in her interview, I can say without reservation that she did not get the job because of the impression she left on my supervisor.

I still meet people like the young lady described above on a weekly basis. Yes in 2010! I figured its because they don't know any better, and so this post was born. Although there are several ways to inquire about a job opening, the old fashioned way is to visit the place of business and inquire in person. Understand if you decide to do it this way, your visit will be an informal addition to your application process.

Sidenote: Before you make the trip look up the company's info and call to make sure the manager/HR employee is available. You do not want to make an unecessary trip.

While you have the option of calling in (with a pleasant and articulate phone voice of course), if you decide to visit the business, regardless of the position you seek there are a few crucial things you should double check first. Keep in mind that first impressions last long and once made are difficult to change. Here are 4 things you should check:

1. Clothes. While most companies do not look for you to wear a $2000 tailored suit from Brooks Brothers to pick up an app or to speak to their HR department, your clothes should be neat and presentable. This means no wrinkled jeans, no baggy shirts, no [visible] holes ANYWHERE. You may want to scout out the place a day or two before you officially go and speak with the appropriate people to get a feel for how the employees dress. Your clothes are a representation of your judgment. Also, employers want to know you can dress the part of an employee. If they are ill-fitted or dirty, employers may view this negatively. You can never go wrong with business casual and a smile. This leads to...

2. Teeth. Make sure you do not have anthing in your teeth and that your breath is fresh. Im not trying to be facetious. I have spoken with people who's breath was less than fresh and who have had things lodged in their teeth that ranged from spinach to pizza sauce. Check your smile before you walk in or avoid eating foods that may get stuck in your teeth or ruin your breath.

3. Hair. The "messy bed head" look is not ok. Make sure your hair looks groomed and well kept. Combs, brushes and lite amounts of hair gel are friends to us all.

4. Attitude. You want to make your visit a pleasant one. You do not want to strike the management/HR employees as an unpleasant person. Enter with a smile and ask one of the employees if you can speak with a manager/HR employee. Patiently wait for the person to come to meet you and explain the reason for your visit. Ask about their application process and what your experience will be like. Once you've grasped an understanding, smile and walk away.

Sidenote: Do NOT under any circumstances return a paper application with spelling mistakes or several scribble marks. Do not fold it, wrinkle it, or destroy it in any way.  Politely ask for another application and fill it out (free of mistakes) again.

I know people are tired of hearing about our terrible economy (which is arguably recovering), but we have to be more mindful of every step of the application process. If you decide to inquire about a job in person, make sure you look presentable.
What do you think? Should inquiring about a position be considered another part of the application process? The floor is yours....

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

Good morning everyone!!! TGIF!  Here is today's quote:

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” - Mark Twain

Surround yourself with positive people everyday. If you happen to come across people who are on a mission to make you feel "less than" distance yourself from such people. Do not waste energy on dealing with negative people! It sounds cliche, but life is too short to spend it surrounded by the wrong people. Create a circle of trust, respect and encouragement and allow everyone else to fall out of line. The people who dont make the cut dont deserve your company.

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

Good morning all! Happy Thursday! Here is today's quote:

"To create something exceptional, your mindset must be relentlessly focused on the smallest detail." -Giorgio Armani

Paying attention to detail can be the difference between making a positive first impression and a negative one. We all know how difficult it is to change one's impression of us after we have failed to put our best foot forward. The last thing you want to do is put in extra hours to make your dreams come true and then lose your grip because you failed to pay attention to detail. As my grammy says "dot your eyes and cross your tees." In other words, doublecheck EVERYTHING! Remember every step you take is a step to build your brand. YOU have to decide what kind of brand you want to build. If you want to be known for your dependability then go the extra mile to make others recognize your brand as such. If you want to be known as a stickler for perfection then spend your time perfecting everything you put out as your work product!

Focus on building and maintaining a positive brand! You can do it! I believe in you!

Sharing is Caring: ready, SET, go!

Its almost lunch time and for some of you that means a gourmet lunch with swanky people at a fancy restaurant. Although many of us do not enjoy such luxuries, every blue moon we get an invite to a 5 star restaurant where the server has an exotic name and the food is top notch. Many of us have accepted an invitation to attend a formal dinner, sat down at the table with our stomachs growling, and realized that we didn’t know which fork or spoon to use or why there were so many knives on the table. If you have ever had this experience then this post is for you.

Side note: You should never arrive to a dinner with professionals on an empty stomach. Always eat a light snack to combat your growling stomach and to ensure that you don’t attack your food like a savage beast when it arrives.

A place setting is a very sensible and organized system that works beautifully when you know how to function within the system. Take a look at (click on) the diagram below to help you identify each piece within an informal and formal place setting.
The informal place setting is what you will see at most moderately priced restaurants, small banquets/fundraisers or at a casual (house) dinner party. You can expect to see a formal place setting at a high end restaurant, formal banquet/fundraiser or formal (house) dinner party.

As a rule of thumb remember to work from the outside in as it relates to your utensils. The first utensil you can expect to use will either be your salad fork or your soup spoon. However, you may use your oyster fork for a seafood dish that may be served as an appetizer.

Watch the video below for a better understanding of the structure and function of a formal place setting. The best way to learn how to use a formal place setting is to know how to set one up. Happy Dining!

Good morning everyone! Its time for today's quote:

“Only with absolute fearlessness can we slay the dragons of mediocrity that invade our gardens -George Lois

I believe everyone has had experiences where they have been afraid. Whether its staring at the teeth of a vicious dog or staring in the eyes of a board of directors, we have all had our moments. Your heart pounds. Your sweat glands go into overdrive. Your adrenaline rushes. The key to fear is to recognize it and to face the reason it exists. The longer you run from the source of your fears, the more power it has over you. Do not let fear overcome you! Be fearless!!!

Sidenote: HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT OBAMA! Wishing you many more years of happiness, success and fearlessness!

Out the door...inspirational quote to start your day

Good morning all!! Congrats you've conquered Monday and its my job to keep the streak going. Here is today's quote:

"Folks who never do any more than they get paid for, never get paid for any more than they do."
-Elbert Hubbard

Have you ever met someone who does just enough to get by. Not sure? Here are a few signs:
If the professor says write 3 to 5 pages, they write 2 and 7/8ths, then make an argument that its closer to 3 than 2.  Ok I'm guilty *hangs head in shame*
They make $10/hour and their ends have never met.
They constantly have to be told what to do.
If given down time, they spend it doing absolutely nothing until an authority figure comes along and tells them otherwise.
They do their job just good enough to remain employed and nothing more.
They do all of these things and then have the gall to wonder why they are constantly passed over for promotion?!?

I hope its more clear now. There is no need to be ashamed. Well all know someone like this and some of us are that person. A lack of ambition is not just a condition it is a debilitating mindset that festers into a disease! The only way to fight it off is with hard work and setting goals regularly. Put in the extra work and go the extra mile more often than not. Set milestones for yourself that require you to continue to work hard to acheive. Do not settle on being "good enough" because good enough is no longer enough.

Do something great today!

4 Black Lawmakers Fighting Ethics Charges. Racial Profiling or Accurate Accusations??

 Photo: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.politicsdaily.com/media/2009/04/85485553.jpg

In case you haven't heard, for the first time in 2 decades, the House Ethics Committee is investigating several black lawmakers for ethics violations. The 2 more popular battles involve Democrats Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters who are both are fighting for their reputations and perhaps their political careers.

There’s a “dual standard, one for most members and one for African-Americans,” said one member of the Congressional Black Caucus, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The member said it’s too easy for an outside group to damage someone’s reputation by filing a claim with OCE.

“This is stacked against you once an accusation is made,” the lawmaker added. “You’re guilty until proven otherwise.”
Black representatives are being singled our for scrutiny because the Office of Congressional Ethics is targeting them unfairly. At one point earlier this year, all eight lawmakers under formal investigation by the House ethics committee, including Charles Rangel and Maxine Waters, were black Democrats. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) has come under Justice Department investigation over his role in the Rod Blagojevich scandal and black lawmaker, Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) has been caught up in an ongoing Justice Department criminal probe involving some of Queens’s most powerful politicians.

Other black Democrats who have found themselves in ethics or legal trouble in recent years include: former Rep. Frank Ballance (N.C.), who went to federal prison in 2005 after being convicted on federal fraud and money laundering charges; former Rep. Earl Hilliard (Ala.), who was found by the ethics committee in 2002 to have improper used campaign funds; and Rep. Corrine Brown (Fla.), who was investigated but cleared in 2000 over the gift of a car to her daughter and other allegations.
“House Democrats are paying a price for OCE’s focus on black lawmakers,” added a Democratic insider close to House leaders. “But that doesn’t change the fact that voters are going to see two African-Americans on trial in the House while they see no action against white members with ethical problems.”

As pointed out by Politico:
The racism charge, though, was rejected by Melanie Sloan, executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, an ethics watchdog group, even as she acknowledged the current situation is bound to anger black lawmakers

“There are ethics problems within the CBC,” she said. “They have to acknowledge that.”

Sloan noted that several white lawmakers, including Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) and Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-Ind.), are currently under investigation by federal and congressional investigators. Ensign is being investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee and the Justice Department over the fallout from an extramarital affair he had with the wife of a top aide, while Visclosky and his former chief of staff are being probed over their ties to a now-defunct lobbying firm raided by the feds last year.

Two other white lawmakers, Reps. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) and Mark Souder (R-Ind.), resigned this year under ethical clouds. Massa left Congress after Politico reported he was under investigation by the ethics committee for sexually harassing male staffers, while Souder quickly departed after admitting a long-running extramarital affair with a part-time aide.”

It seems to me that the very existence of these ethics charges is symbolic of a system that is fighting against corruption and ethical violations. It also seems to me that since so many of the people fighting the charges are people of color is more shady than a palm tree in Florida. I'm not prepare to pull the race card just yet. I'm looking at you Jesse Jackson. Maybe the CBC needs to let the cat out of the bag and come clean about its issues. What do you all think??

Good morning friends and family!! Here is today's quote:
"A life lived with integrity - even if it lacks the trappings of fame and fortune is a shining star in whose light others may follow in the years to come." -Denis Waitley

There is so much power in being honest with yourself and being honest with others. Do not make empty promises. Do not overexert yourself such that you begin to make promises on which you cannot deliver. I challenge you all to conduct yourselves with integrity and honesty. Its as simple and as complex as that. Do you know what today is???

its a celebration Pictures, Images and Photos
Its HUSL Today's Anniversary!!!

I know I haven't been posting regularly for the entire year, but what the hay its still a celebration!  In honor of our special day, I decided to take some time to reflect on the past year.

What I've learned: Blogging has truly been a journey of self discovery. I've learned so much about myself in this past year, and YES a year really does make a big difference. A year ago I was sitting behind my desk at my public interest internship struggling to write my first post. Now that I have allowed HUSL Today to have its own personality as a source of many types of information, it has taken on a life of its own. If I read an interesting story or if a controversial topic emerges, I now feel an obligation to acknowledge it and write a post about it.

What I wish I knew: How much hard work blogging regularly can be! Unless you have ever tried your hand at blogging there is really no way to explain this. All I can say is, there are a lot of late nights and early mornings. Thinking of topics, researching info and putting my own spin on them is extremely time consuming.

What I look forward to: An increase in user interaction between myself and my readers. I know you all stop by regularly because our page impressions are on a steady increase. The second biggest part of a blog is user interaction. If no one comments or leaves constructive criticism I have no way of knowing whether you liked a particular post or not. I'd like to get to know all of you, but I can't do that unless you introduce yourselves. Dont be shy :).

What I plan to change: As I said before, blogging has become a personal journey for me. On that journey I have learned I reach my goals more often when I articulate them. This time I'm going to articulate them in groups of 3:
1. Learn to take a TRUE break when I know I need one. I often find myself blogging on my day off or working on another business venture. I'm always so motivated that I feel guilty when I let loose and become lazy. What I dont think I do often enough is give myself mental breaks. I vow to start doing this more.
2. Adjust the way I approach situations. I often approach issues by asking "whats wrong?" instead of starting with "whats right?" Thats just my way of saying I will be more optimistic than pessimistic. I will change my attitude and remain thankful for every opportunity presented to me, good or bad.
3. Allow HUSL Today to develop its own personality. I will fill this in as I think more about where I want to take HUSL Today and the path I want to take to get there.

Because I love tying music to my posts, check out this musical interlude.

Climb aboard HUSL Today's train as we prepare for another year filled with motivation, inspiration, relevant news and useful tips. I promise to work hard to take HUSL Today to another level and continue to distinguish it as a reliable source of up to date information regarding any topic concerning Young Professionals and the world at large.

I appreciate all of you and I am grateful you decided to stop by. Feel free to share how your life has changed within the last year.

Peace and Love!

-Raine L. Gabrielle
