Music Monday: 90s classics

You're at work.
You have no energy.
You need music.
*queue superhero music* HUSLToday to the rescue.

While you may be under the impression that music has nothing to do with advancing your professional career, you are mistaken. Everyone has an opinion on music, good or bad. Music is the solution to overcoming the awkward moment at a networking event. Music is the bond that holds us all together. Music gives us a way to express ourselves. Music is love. Music is life. Now I ask you, whatever happened to good hip hop music? I love hip hop & R & B like a fat kid loves cake but our relationship is on the rocks because I dont think the best artists are in the metaphoric limelight. The focus is not on talent, it is on "the look." See generally, Rihanna.

Read the rest to see my picks and share yours.

1. The Fugees: Killing Me Softly. Say what you want about L boogie and the direction of her life but her last project was The Miseducation of Lauryn which I still play from start to finish, no skips, over a decade later.

2. Destiny's Child: Bills, Bills, Bills. Before Destiny's Child started releasing kicking members out to become Beyonce & them, they were a well rounded group of beautiful women with standards. They were aware of their influence on their younger fans and took special measures not to dance provocatively. Their outfits were fairly conservative and sexual references were subliminal. Add catchy lyrics and intriguing dance moves in 4 inch stilettos and you've got the formula for the most successful girl group in history.

3. R. Kelly: I believe I can fly. Before he started making videos that would later be admissible as evidence in a courtroom and before he released 50,000 chapters of trapped in the closet, R. Kelly's music was considered timeless. This song was performed at every graduation, wedding, sweet 16, bat mitzvah, college sendoff party, and baby shower for at least two years after it was released. Sing it with me: "If I just believe it, there's nothing to it, I believe I can fly."

Spread your wings and fly away.

4. Micheal Jackson: Black or White. The guy invented the moonwalk If you've ever attempted (and failed) to moonwalk you appreciate his level of talent. Thriller.  Forget all the allegations and the fact that he's gone too soon, Micheal is a music icon. No one will ever take his place in the music business. His music is timeless and so are his jackets.
