Tell us how you REALLY feel: Arizona Immigration Law

Hi all, I hope you're having a beautiful weekend thus far. Further, I hope the fact that you're sitting here reading this is not indicative of the fact that there seems to be nothing to do in your city. Nevertheless, here's the scoop. On Friday, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed the state's immigration bill into law.The law orders immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and requires police to question people if there's reason to suspect they're in the United States illegally. It also targets those who hire illegal immigrant laborers or knowingly transport them.

Critics, including immigrant advocates and the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, say they are concerned the law will foster racial profiling, arguing that most police officers don't have enough training to look past race while investigating a person's legal status.

The last immigration reform efforts in Congress were in 2005 when Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, and the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, Brown's predecessor, introduced a bipartisan bill that aimed to implement guest-worker programs and ways for more illegal immigrants to become citizens.

My opinion: The law is considered to be among the toughest legislation in the nation. Immigration bills have increased in recent years and I think its partly due to concerns about our economy. The bottom line is that illegal immigrants come here and gain employment. Critics say they are taking jobs away from American citizens. In my opinion, many of the jobs immigrants are taking are jobs Americans are too pish posh to accept. Most of the work is blue collar and they work the jobs Americans dont want. If you don't believe me, take a visit to a day labor building or a construction site. Now that the economy has tanked and people are "jobless" the government and the powers that be are looking for someone (or in this case  whole group) to blame for our situation. Instead of being more proactive about repairing our nation, some choose to exert energy playing the blame game. The Arizona law is a prime example of legalized racial profiling and it rivals laws 150 years ago that required free colored slaves to carry their free papers. Authorities used to color of law to disguise their profiling efforts since they could stop and demand the colored slave to show their free papers. The law was manipulated and law proved to be another way for authorities to treat freed colored slaves unjustly.

I anticipate propaganda against illegal immigrants in an effort to gain support for the bill as well as protests on both sides. I'm interested to see how it plays out.

Sidenote: Don't misinterpret my opinion as an insult to the immigrant population because many of my friends come from immigrant families. I have protested and boycotted places in the fight for immigrant rights.

Now its your turn. Tell us how you REALLY feel about the Arizona Immigration law. Remember you may choose to remain anonymous.
