African American Music Appreciation Month

African American Music Appreciation Month Continues with...

Craig Mack

Above is the original version of Flava in Ya Ear, which was released in 1994 by one of  Bad Boy's first artists, Craig Mack. Mack's claim to fame was his affiliation with Diddy's Bad Boy Entertainment record label in the 1990s. Although his first single was released under the name MC EZ in 1988, he is best known for his 1994 hit single Flava in Ya Ear.  The remix of the single was the breakout appearance of the label’s most popular artist Notorious B.I.G. You can listen to the remix below.

Flava in Ya Ear (rmx.) is the first and only time label mates Notorious B.I.G and Craig Mack collaborated on a song. Released in 1994, the song first appeared on the Project: Funk Da World, B Side. It later appeared on Bad Boy's 10th Anniversary... The Hits album. The single itself peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The remix also features Rampage, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes and a cameo by Diddy.

Biggie delivered one of my favorite verses he ever wrote:

"Ni**as is mad I get more butt than ash trays,
F*ck a fair one I get mines the fast way,
The ski mask way,
 Uhh,
Ransom notes,
 Far from handsome...but d*mn a ni**a tote
more guns than roses,
Foes is,
shaking in their boots,
Invisible bullies like The Gooch,
Disappear...vamoose...you're wack to me,
Take them rhymes back to the factory,
I see,
The gimmicks...the wack lyrics,
The sh*t is depressing...pathetic...please forget it,
You're mad cause my style you're admiring,
Don't be mad...UPS is hiring,
You shoulda been a cop...f*ck hip-hop,
With that freestyle you're bound to get shot,
Not from Houston but I rap-a-lot,
Pack the gat a lot,
The flav's bout to drop..."
After hearing the remix for the first time, I knew Craig Mack would be the next big thing in rap. BUT just like many of Bad Boy's first artists his career never took off. *sigh*

I always thought it was sad that Craig Mack's Flava in Ya Ear rmx was the song that ended his career. Diddy was always notoriously (no Big Pun intended) unable to focus on more than one thing at a time. The minute Biggie blew up, Mack was done...

At first it was just a shady practice but now Diddy has screwed over so many careers its common practice that Diddy was only focused on his own career. Any artists desperate enough to sign to his label MUST know their career won't last long.
