Public Enemy

Public enemy is a hip hop group that was formed in the 1980s in Long Island, New York. The members consist of consisting of Chuck D; Flavor Flav; Professor Griff and his S1Wgroup; DJ Lord; Hype man Daniel Mcgowan, who replaced Terminator X in 1999; and Music Director Khari Wynn.


As one of the first hip hop groups to gain international recognition and sell their albums in MP3 format, Public Enemy used politically charged lyrics to criticize the media and bring the plight of African Americans to the forefront of pop culture. Their unique approach helped to propel them into the hip hop history books. Public Enemy was more than a rap group, they helped raise the social and political consciousness of their listeners with popular songs like "Fight the Power," which was heavily featured in Spike Lee's joint Do the Right Thing. They also traveled abroad and took a stance on social issues. Their album, Nation of Millions is the first hip hop album to be ranked number one by predominantly rock critics in a major periodical and is ranked the 17th best album of all time (and best album of the 1980s) by Acclaimed Music. Fear of the black planet, their most successful album, is now preserved in the Library of Congress.

In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Public Enemy number forty-four on its list of the Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Acclaimed Music ranks them the 29th most recommended musical act of all time and the highest hip-hop group. The group was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

How could we forget the group that spawned the clock wearing persona otherwise known as Flavor Flav? With his Flavor of Love shows, Mr. Flav helped change the lineup of our favorite networks and became the face of reality tv dating shows with an "urban" demographic. You know what time it is!


The group now independently produces and releases their music. Remember, all of our heroes dont appear on a stamp!
