African American Music Appreciation Month 2011

African American Music Appreciation Month Continues with...

Grandmaster flash and the Furious 5
Long lauded as one of the most influential songs in hip-hop, The Message was featured on the debut studio album of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The album was released in 1982 on Sugar Hill Records. It is considered one of the most prominent records in the history of hip-hop music.

Take a music break and listen to The Message

It was ranked #5 in VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop, and #1 on a similar list by DigitalDreamDoor. The beat has been sampled by rappers such as Diddy ("Can't Nobody Hold Me Down")  and Ice Cube ("Check Yo Self").  The chorus has also been sampled in different variations too many times to list.

In 2010, Melle Mel and Scorpio appeared in an Australian commercial for the Kia Sportage in which they perform 'The Message'.
