Rapper's Delight
The 1979 hit Rapper's Delight, the first hip hop single to become a Top 40 hit. Although it is not the first single to feature rapping, it is credited with being the first popular hip hop song-ever.
"Rapper's Delight" was a #36 hit on the U.S. pop chart and a #4 hit on the U.S. R&B chart in 1979. It is often cited as the first hip hop single; however it can be argued that it was actually "King Tim III (Personality Jock)", by the Fatback Band, which at the time was considered to be under the funk genre. I wont delve into the debate about who was first, but I know countless successful artists have cited this song as their first run in with hip-hop and their inspiration to pursue a career in the music industry.
