African American Music Appreciation Month

African American Music Appreciation Month Continues With...

Rapper's Delight

The 1979 hit Rapper's Delight, the first hip hop single to become a Top 40 hit. Although it is not the first single to feature rapping, it is credited with being the first popular hip hop song-ever.

"Rapper's Delight" was a #36 hit on the U.S. pop chart and a #4 hit on the U.S. R&B chart in 1979. It is often cited as the first hip hop single; however it can be argued that it was actually "King Tim III (Personality Jock)", by the Fatback Band, which at the time was considered to be under the funk genre. I wont delve into the debate about who was first, but I know countless successful artists have cited this song as their first run in with hip-hop and their inspiration to pursue a career in the music industry. Without further adieu, take a music break (and rap along if you know the lyrics) with the Sugarhill Gang.

*Rapping Along* Now what you hear is not a test, I'm rappin to the beat. And me the groove and my friends are gonna try to move your feet. You see I am Wondermike and I'd like to say hello. To the black to the white  the red and the brown the purple and yellow. But first I gotta bang bang the boogey to the boogey say up jumps the boogey to the bang bang boogey lets rock, ya don't stop. Rock the rhythm that'll make your body rock. That was fun! *giggles*

Gotta love the Sugarhill Gang. Just FYI, The Gang is still touring.
